Support Fairtrade Fortnight
19 February 2014

While many newsletters and press articles are focusing on Valentine’s Day wine choices and things to do on 14th February, we are looking a little further ahead to Fairtrade Fortnight which is taking place from 24th February to 9th March. During these two weeks, your purchasing decisions could make a huge difference to the lives of others.
During Fairtrade Fortnight, we are encouraging you to try wines that carry the Fairtrade mark.
South Africa produces about 65 per cent of all Fairtrade wines available worldwide and in the UK you will find Fairtrade wines strongly featured in most retailers, countrywide.
The Co-operative, a big champion of Fairtrade, is celebrating 10 years of supporting wines that hold the Fairtrade mark and they are asking customers to take the ‘Fairtrade Wine Challenge’ by trying one of the wines from its Fairtrade range instead of their usual choice. What’s more, the Co-operative is offering 20 per cent off selected Fairtrade wines from 24th February to 11th March.
Virgin Wines will also be supporting Fairtrade Fortnight. Since 2008 Virgin Wines has contributed over £17,000 to various Fairtrade projects in South Africa by donating funds from the sale of its exclusive Fairtrade wines called Usizo, which means ‘assistance’ in Zulu. So far, the funds raised from sales of Usizo have helped to build an after-care facility for children at a primary school and a library project.
Within the Usizo range, you can try a Shiraz, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard Sauvignon Blanc, each priced at £8.49 per bottle.
Many other retailers will be supporting Fairtrade Fortnight and we hope you take the opportunity to enjoy some Fairtrade wines this month and help to make a real difference.
